ABOUT BOSLA

The Bombay Science Librarian’s Association (BOSLA) was established in October 1975 and officially registered on 9th March 1978 with Registration No. F4735 (BOM) at the Office of the Charity Commissioner, Maharashtra State, Mumbai.

During 1970s, the librarians of scientific institutions realized that with the existing resources, it was not possible for them to fully cater to the needs of the scientific community of their organizations due to the steadily rising costs of publications and almost stationary annual budgets for their libraries.

The initiative was then taken by the librarians of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (B.A.R.C.), Department of Chemical Technology, Bombay University (U.D.C.T.), Indian Institute of Technology (I.I.T.), Bombay and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (T.I.F.R.). They started meeting frequently to discuss and explore the possibilities of developing closer ties than routine inter-library loan. As a result of these efforts, the Bombay Science Librarian’s Association (BOSLA) was formed in October 1975.

Presently, the association has grown to include more than 500 life members nationwide. The association keeps organizing seminars, conferences, and workshops in association with various institutions with the main objective of upskilling the working knowledge of the librarians.

Main objectives of the Association:

  • To improve the services of the Bombay science libraries.
  • To cooperate actively so as to benefit mutually by the resources available to the libraries.
  • To strengthen the financial resources of the science libraries in Bombay.
  • To raise the professional standard of library staff in the Bombay science libraries.
  • To improve the status and service conditions of the library staffers in Bombay.
  • To maintain liaison between the professionals and the Government.

About SGPCs Guru Nanak Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai

At GNIMS, there is a strong emphasis on mentoring wherein faculty provide one to one guidance and counselling for each student.  Students and professors connect mutually through mentoring, which provides guidance and direction for students. GNIMS has instituted Project-Based Learning (PBL) as a key element of its pedagogy in industry partnership.  GNIMS offers interested students International Intensive Internships, III, for 8 weeks abroad through its global collaborations. It has a tie-up with overseas universities to provide accommodation, projects and certifications for its III interns. The recent interns returning from Denmark (Aarhus University) and United Kingdom (Teesside University) received overwhelming appreciation and demand from local recruiters. GNIMS also organises a variety of initiatives to assist students from vernacular backgrounds to improve their English. The Institute’s brick and mortar structures with its many facilities may seem to be impressive but in reality they pale into insignificance when compared to the other priceless assets of the institute – our people – our students, the administrative staff, the faculty, the researchers and of course, our strong alumni. An institute is made up of people who form its core, its throbbing throbbing heart whilst the students educational experience forms its vibrant soul and the faculty the brain. An institute derives its purpose and function from the people who occupy its physical space. GNIMS is a community of stakeholders of which our students and ex-students-the alumni, are the core.

About GNIMS Library

GNIMS Library is open to all students, faculty, visiting faculty, research scholars and research associates, and the institute’s staff. However, non-GNIMS can also use the Library  with the written permission from the Director/Library Manager.

The library takes an active part in the orientation program organized by the Institute for the benefit of new users in the beginning of the academic year. They are taken around the library to familiarize them with various resources and services available for them. Readers should maintain peace in the library and should not disturb other users in any way.

The library extensively uses social media for improved communication and interaction and has created a Class Representative’s WhatsApp Group to post interesting information, news items, activities and events conducted by the library. This is the reflection of the library’s continuous engagement with its users as a valuable partner in their learning and research.

These rules are framed to help and promote, rather than to constrain; the use of library resources and services. Also this enables the library to carry out its functions as efficiently as possible.
