In India, TMH is one of the leading tertiary referral centres for cancer treatment, education, and research since 1941. All three modalities of treatment, viz., surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, are offered under one roof. Started as a philanthropist from the house of Tata’s since the 1960s, it is under the financial and administrative control of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). TMH is listed in the prestigious directory offering cancer treatments around the world by the UICC (Union for Intemational Cancer Control-WHO). TMH offers various, UG, PG and the super-specialty courses in oncology and allied discipline.
The visionary management of the institute has realized the importance of the library from its inception. TMH Digital Library has evolved over a period. It is spread over an area of about 5,500 square feet. The present print collection of books is more than 8,600 and bound volumes 22,000. We subscribed to more than 3000+ mostly International journals mainly in digital format dedicated to the oncology and allied disciplines. This brings uniqueness to the oncology collection to cater for the clinical and other information needs of the clientele. In addition, the library subscribes to five E-Databases.
The library has kept pace with modernization since the mid-eighties, when library automation started. Accordingly, the priority for library automation began with the indigenous bibliographic database of the Indian clinical cancer literature on the mainframe computers. Early nineties witness the introduction of CD- ROM technology in the LAN environment followed by the Internet facilities for the benefit of the bona fide users. Since the mid nineties, library automation towards serials control, circulation, and other similar activities has been in place. The Digital Library Initiative and DAE Consortium were the next logical steps just in time. Now TMH Digital Library has played a pivotal role in the ODOS (One DAE One Subscription) for two leading publishers. The library moved to the transformative agreements to benefit the institution’s authors and provide an opportunity for open access publishing. The library has followed a policy of control growth.
